Experiment: To investigate the factors that cause the size of a shadow to change.
Part A
Variable: a) that keep the same-the distance between the object and the wall
b) that is changed-the distance between the object and the torch
c) that is observe-the size of the shadow
Material and apparatus: torch and opaque object
Method:
1. The apparatus is set up as show in the above diagram
2. The torch is switched on.
3. The shadow formed on the wall is observed.
4. The torch is moved further form the opaque object and the size of the shadow is observed again.
Observation:
When the torch is moved further from the object, the size of the shadow is smaller
Conclusion:
The size of the shadow becomes smaller when the distance between the object and the light source increases.
Part B
Variable: a) that keep the same-the distance between the object and the torch
b) that is changed-the distance between the object and the wall
c) that is observe-the size of the shadow
Material and apparatus: torch and opaque object
Method:
1. Step 1 to 3 in part A are repeated.
2. The object is moved further from the wall.
3. The size of shadow is observed.
Observation:
When the object is moved futher from the wall, the size of the shadow is bigger.
Conclusion:
The size of the shadow increases when the distance between the object and the wall increases.
